Biofreeze for Muscle Soreness

Great Product to Use For Muscle Soreness

Being a Personal Trainer,  clients ask me what kind of products they can use to help with muscle soreness.

There is a product I have known about since I was working in the Physical Therapy field.

When I  was working as a Physical Therapist Assistant, one of the Physical Therapists brought out this wonderful product called Biofreeze. At the time well-known products such as Icy Hot or Bengay where available.  I know those other products are still around but I really like Biofreeze.

*Side Note: Shape It Up is not affiliated with Biofreeze. I do NOT receive any compensation what-so-ever from telling you about Biofreeze. I happen to like the product and I thought you would like to know about it too 😉

How Does Biofreeze Help With Muscle Soreness?

The main ingredient in Biofreeze is menthol. It does have a smell  but in my opinion it doesn’t smell as strong as IcyHot and Bengay.

Biofreeze is a topical analgesic. When you rub Biofreeze on your skin it overrides your pain signals to your brain. It will not cure your muscle soreness.

Once applied, the Biofreeze produces a cool sensation much like ‘cold therapy’ (also called cryotherapy) which is used in Physical Therapy. Cryotherapy is essentially using cold (like ice) to temporarily relieve pain. Unlike with cryotherapy, Biofreeze gives the cold feel but without the pain and numbness sometimes found with using ice.

What Forms Does Biofreeze Come In?

  1. Gel Tube

  2. The gel tube is great for applying along with massage to alleviate muscle soreness.

  3. Gel Tube Hands- Free Applicator

  4. This applicator can be used either with hands or hands-free.  Works very well on smaller joints such as knuckles.

  5. Roll- On Applicator

  6. This is also hands-free and I demonstrate how to use the roll-on in the above video. This is great for massaging sore muscle and hitting trigger point areas.

  1. No it will not. Biofreeze provides temporary relief.

  2. You can apply it up to 4x per day.

  3. Do not use for more than 7 days in a row. This is a sign there is something else going on….meaning it’s time to see a healthcare professional.

  4. If you are pregnant or nursing always check with your health care professional before you use this product.

  5. Do NOT  use Biofreeze with a heating pad
