How To Make Your New Year Resolutions Stick

It’s January and most people are setting New Year Resolutions. Have you set a resolution or are you just setting a “goal”. I’m finding most people are ditching the phrase “New Year Resolution” because these resolutions have a track record of not being successful.

Did you know that 80% of people have a hard time making their New Year Resolutions stick and typically quit by mid-February??

Do you want to be in the 80th percentile or the 20th??

Regardless, of whether you call it a resolution or a goal….I am hoping that you have set one or are working on one.

WHY?

I think without goals you can’t move forward…you can’t evolve into a better version of yourself.

How To Make Your New Year Resolutions Stick

Here are my suggestions to be in that 20%….To have the best chance at keeping you New Year goals waaaay past February.

So, let’s talk goals and making those New Year Resolutions stick

How many years have you had the SAME goal?

Why haven’t you achieved it yet?

You might have started off well intended come January but by mid-February your plan just seems to tank. Why is that?

This is what I work on with my clients. Figuring out the “why” is the key. This is why I dive into the mindset of my clients not just nutrition and exercise.

Awareness Of Where You Currently Are

We all like to just dive in and think of the goal but what I would like to suggest is to take a good look at where you currently are. If weight loss is your goal, find out your current weight, your measurements or which pair of pants don’t fit you.

Once you have some hard facts then I want you to dive into WHY you want to change?

Why do you want to lose the weight? If you answer “because” or “I just want to feel better” you need to dig deeper. My suggestion would be to get out a piece of paper and write down a minimum of 50 reasons WHY you want to lose weight. If you find a sentence that you wrote that brings up a lot of emotion for you…this is one you want to pay attention to.

Hold onto this paper because you will need to pull it out on days when you “just don’t wanna” to continue to go after your goal.

End Game

Where you want to go (what do you want to REALLY achieve with this goal). I want you to dream big….no HUGE!

What is really going to light you up?

If I could wave a magic wand and give you the life that you deepestly desire (yes I know that’s not a real word lol)….what would you want?

If weight loss is your goal, looking good at your dream weight isn’t really your goal.

It’s what you feel and think at your dream goal weight.

Fill in the blank “When I am at my ______lbs (insert goal weight ) I will feel ______(sexy, fit, strong, accomplished, etc). I will think I am __________(in control, a badass, a role model to my kids, am worthy etc).

All The Stuff in The Middle

Okay, now here comes the “fun” part.

In order for you to get what you say you want…you need to become a different version of yourself.

Reread that….

You need to become a DIFFERENT version of you.

The you that you currently are is the you that got you to this place you are at.

This means if you want to drop 50 pounds you cannot continue to do and be the same version of yourself.

We are so comfortable in who we are.

We have beliefs that you “can” or “cannot” do something…or “should” or “shouldn’t” ….

Letting go of this current version of you is challenging.

You are going to be doing things that make you uncomfortable A LOT of the time. Like reporting to your trainer. Passing on tempting foods. Learning how to stop overeating and sit with your emotions.

You family and friends are going to have to adjust to the new version you are becoming.

You will need to go through your version of hell in order to get what it is you SAY you really want.

Are you ready to be miserable and uncomfortable until you achieve your goal?

Many are initially…until it starts to get hard.

I work on this daily with my clients. I find out what is holding them back.

Weight loss IS simple in theory.

Eat less and move more.

It’s the emotions and stories we like to tell ourselves which make the whole process “hard and challenging” and makes you want to give up.

If you can learn the tools to take all the drama out of the process it becomes easier and dare, I say simple.

If you are ready to learn the tools to not only lose weight but be able to keep it off for life you can learn more here.
