Most people are setting goals this time of year. About 20% of people are striving for some achievement whether they are setting a personal goal or a business goal.
What is surprising out of the 20% of people who set goals… about 80% fail.
It’s amazing that any goals are achieved with these numbers.
There are typically four areas in the of types of goals:
Wealth – Increase of money in the bank. Want to save up to go on a trip.
Health – Want to lose 10 pounds or 50 pounds. Want to have more energy. Look great in a swimsuit. Have a flatter stomach.
Relationships – Want to communicate better with partner. Want to have open communication with your kids. Have more friends in your life.
Self-fulfillment – satisfaction that you can achieve what you say you want. Be happier. Be at peace.
Here are some of the top reasons why most people fail to achieve their goal
Fear of failure is a huge reason people fail to achieve their goals. “What if I can’t do all my workouts?” …I love alcohol too much to give it up! How can I not have a drink for the next 12 weeks? …I am a failure if I overeat one day.”
Interestingly, fear of success is even more prevalent. “When I lose the weight how will I keep it off?…What will people say about me? …Will I get unwanted attention when I am thinner?” These are all very real thoughts that could be holding you back.
Fear is HUGE because you can’t win if you’re afraid of failing AND your afraid of success which leads into the next point of why people fail to achieve their goals…
Do you ever get to the point in your goal plan and you think “This isn’t working. Maybe I chose the wrong plan.”
Then you start ruminating over what you think you “should” or “shouldn’t” do…Then you become soooo confused you become essentially brain paralyzed and do nothing. Welcome to analysis paralysis.
Stewing over a decision will delay you getting to your goal.
The longer you spend in confused land the more confused you will get.
This is your brain trying to sabotage you and keep you safe in the cave. Remember you have two parts of the brain that are controlling your thoughts, feelings and therefore your actions or inactions.
Your primitive brain (your lower brain) job is to feed you, seek pleasure, keep you alive and procreate. That is it. Your lower brain is always going to try to keep you safe in the cave.
Don’t venture out you will for sure die.
Don’t make any big scary goals because we are good here.
You don’t need to change.
You need to eat cake…yeah that’ll be much better than that goal you have of feeling good in your clothes. Eating cake will make you feel just as good if not better than that goal of yours.
Then you have your prefrontal cortex (I like to call your sophisticated brain).
This is the brain side that wants you not only have big dreams and goals but wants you to accomplish them. This is your cheerleader, your motivator…THIS is the side of the brain you want to tap into all day long.
The problem is your primitive brain will automatically ALWAYS try to run the show.
Your primitive brain is the one that is putting you into indecision.
How to overcome your brain
This is a major reason why most people fail to achieve their goal.
You need to make a decision and go for it.
No matter what the outcome.
So, if you have committed for a year to work with a trainer or coach…you are in for the year no mater what. Pick the right coach for you and go all in!
Generally, there are only two reasons why you do anything….#1 it brings you pleasure or #2 you are avoiding pain.
The Pleasure Principle
Why do you come home after work pour a glass of wine or dive into a bag of cookies? You are looking for pleasure. You are looking for a reward. You “deserve” this after the hard day of work you had.
Your brain will ALWAYS chose this option over any other options available.
Avoidance of Pain
You’ve just gone to the doctor and have been told you must drop 50 lbs or you are going to have full blown diabetes or cancer or some other life-threatening disease. If you want to avoid the awfulness of your diagnosis, you bet your butt you will be googling everything you can possibly do to make that diagnosis not happen…and money will no longer be an issue not will not having enough time.
So, when you are faced with the choice of staying in bed or going to workout…you FOR SURE will want to pick stay in bed. It’s more pleasurable and the workout might be uncomfortable (dare I say painful.)
When you are really hungry and in a hurry, deciding on a chocolate candy bar in front of you or a healthy meal that you had to prep at home and bring in to work … you FOR SURE will want to pick the candy bar!
Mastering your mind is the KEY to getting all that you say you want.
